Inte delad glädje

Jag älskar fåglar. Roliga djur.

Woop woop.

Skickade in företagsekonomi igår.

Rekommenderar starkt Serien RITA

Skynda fynda!

Utan internet inget netflix

Typical for a gothic story

A typical gothic story is written as “I” in first person. Also writing about horror, terror, omen, supernatural, and sexuality. Also you can say a typical gothic story focus on the dark and evil side of the human. Psychological portrait - “Themes of madness and emotional distress characterize the psychological emphasis of gothic literature.”

Examples from The Black Cat to show how the story can be said to be typically gothic

Here the story shows of the typical signs of gothic story.
The cat “fled in extreme terror when I approached” - The extreme terror, when the cat see Mr Groper coming, and also horror.
..”hung it because I knew that in so doing I was committing a sin, a deadly sin that would so jeopardize my immortal soul” - A deadly sin - which points to horror and terror. “I approached and saw a figure of a gigantic cat” on the wall that didn’t burn. - A figure of a gigantic cat on the wall - supernatural part of the story.

Also the story is in first person “I”. Mr Groper is talking in first person as the narrator.

Kommentar från lärare:
Good job!
Certainly a horrible story that was written in the gothic tradition whose purpose was to show how far a human being can actually go. The author  Poe had his misfortunes too and perhaps there is a lot of him in this story. Interestingly Poe loved cats…     This short story was written in 1842, and it is regarded as the beginning of horror stories. In what way is it different from a criminal story?

No. 2: Speaking - Horror
Choose one of the following oral assignments and record a soundfile:
•  Give a three minute oral presentation of a horror movie you have seen, being sure to note if the music, cinematography or other elements played an important role in creating a sense of horror for those watching the film.
•  Horror stories are often told around a camp fire. Pretend you are at a summer camp where you are the camp counselor. You are sitting around the camp fire with some of the children attending the camp. Tell a horror story that you have either heard or read, trying to create as much of the element of fear as you can. Your story should be 2-3 minutes long.
As always, remember that it is important to speak freely! You may not simply read a story from a full script.Try using keywords instead. A list of keywords will give you the support you need  but also enable you to speak more freely.
Have you used other sources than your own mind? If yes - do not forget to list them in the box to the right.

No. 3: Writing - Literary Analysis
It is now time to write a literary analysis of your novel of choice.
The purpose of a literary analysis essay is to carefully examine a clearly defined aspect of a work of literature. It is a kind of writing that demands tight organization and control.
Therefore, your essay must have a main idea. What exactly is it that you want to analyze in your analysis? You formulate your main idea in a thesis statement. Try to be a specific as you possibly can. A clearly defined main idea will make it easier to go ahead with the actual analysis. A main idea which is less defined and too general will make it very difficult to be precise and focused in your analysis.
Having presented your clearly defined main idea in a thesis statement you proceed with paragraphs in which you support and illustrate your main idea. Finally you round off your essay with a conclusion that grows logically from your paragraphs.
Does this sound difficult? Do not despair - you find detailed instructions about how to write a Literary Analysis in Studieguide 5 as well as in Writer’s Workshop pp 234-239 in Blueprint B. Read these instructions carefully. Then write a literary analysis of 500-700 words on your chosen novel. Do not forget to make sure there is a thesis statement - otherwise your answer will not be written according to the instructions.

Noone wants Heavy Boots

Have you ever lost someone that has passed away? In the novel

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close  written by Jonathan Safran Foer. We get to follow the main character Oskar who lost his father in the 9/11 2001, in the world trade center.

Oskar and his father, Thomas Schell, were very close. Oskar's father played “Reconnaissance Expedition” every sunday. Thomas left Oskar clues to find out about the next mission. The game could go on for weeks. That was the father's way to get Oskar to talk to people and to play with him and to keep his mind occupied. Oskar is a thinker and his thoughts spins all the time. After Oskar's father passed away, Oskar has tried to find clues that his father could have left him. One day Oskar finds a key hidden in a vase, in his dad's closet.

In my analysis i will focus on Oskars grief. How the Heavy Boots is the word for grief in the book. And why is it so important for Oskar to find the lock that fits the key?

I think that Jonathan Safran Foer shows how hard it is to lose someone.

The key, that Oskar finds in the vase, is a way for Oskar to feel close to his father. Oskar is convinced that the key is the clue. He see the name “Black” on the envelope were the key was in. He searches for the key by visiting every person that has the last name Black.

For every visit at the “Blacks” people, Oskars “Heavy Boots” get a little lighter. “Heavy Boots” is a way for Oskar to explain how he has a heavy heart after he lost his father.

Oskar also writes letters to different people. Oskar says “A few weeks after the worst day, I started writing lots of letters. I don’t know why, but it was one of the only things that made my boots lighter”.(p16).

The heavy boots gets lighter when Oskar gets to listen to different “Blacks” stories from their past and about their grief, in the search for the final clue with the key.

At the end he meets the Black that owns the key. And Oskar is upset that the key wasn’t a clue for him. It was a key for Mr Black.

I think it is hard for a small child to lose a parent. A child can react in many different ways. In this novel, Jonathan Foer shows the reader how a child's life can be turned upside down when a tragedy happens.

Oskar is a smart kid and knew that his dad wasn’t in the coffin. Here i think is the heaviest on his heavy boots. He had not said goodbye to his dad properly. And after Oskar had open up the empty coffin and filled it with stuff that matter to him, he finally got lighter boots.

Conclusion is that even the hardest times gets lighter by time. The pain never go away, but you learn how to live with it.

Oskar finally learns to deal with his grief. And he finally opens up to his mother about everything. The key learned Oskar that there are more people that are in grief and has been in grief but feel much better.

Four environmentalists arrested

Last wednesday four Environmentalists, from the organisation Earth Forever, were handcuffed and taken to custody.

It was last wednesday, Tyrone O’Shaugnessy Tierwater and his daughter Sierra together with Andrea Cotton, the spokeswoman for Earth Forever, and their friend Teo Van Sparks, were arrested.

The four environmentalists was blocking the passage for deforestation vehicles in the middle of nowhere.

According to the Sheriff the four activists were standing in concrete up to their knees.

“I don’t know what they were thinking”, said the Sheriff Bob Hicks.

Sheriff Bob Hicks had blocked the passage for all journalists, higher up on the road. But I got a chance to speak with Tyrone Tierwater, after they all got released from custody.

When you were standing there, in the middle of nowhere, what was going on in your mind and what was it that you wanted to achieve with this protest?

- I am a man of nature. I can’t stand beside and watch when people with less intelligence destroy the nature everyday. I wanted to reach out to the people, to open their eyes, on what is going on with nature. I wanted show the people how the nutcases devastate the forest. We need plants and trees to breathe and live. I was hoping you journalists would show up. But the Sheriff stopped you unfortunately up by the road. And you are the only one that actually is asking questions afterwards.

What were you thinking when you took your teenage girl Sierra with you?

- I wanted to show her how we are working when we to try to open people's eyes. What I am doing as an environmentalist out on the field.

The Sheriff told me that you all had diapers, is that true?

- That Sheriff is a stupid moron, excuse my language. When he came up to us, he and his deputies behaved like children. We from the Earth Forever used buckets to sit on during our protest. The Sheriff and his deputies kicked them away from us and just stood there laughing at us, before they took us away to custody. And the answer to your question, yes we used diapers.

Why did you do it? Why did you and your friends do this protest out there, in the middle of nowhere?

- We want the people, the world, everyone to know about the deforestation. So we can do something about it, together.

Don’t you think that people know? And don’t you think there is other ways to get your voices heard?

- If everyone knew, then there wouldn’t be that amount of deforestation in the world.

Yes and no. If me and my friends didn’t do this protest then you wouldn’t be here interviewing me. I could have come direct to you, but then you wouldn’t have had a story, you would have had to investigate my story afterwards.

Where will you go from here? After all, now you have me telling people about it. Would you do this all over again?

- Me and my friends will continue our journey on making our voices heard. I am grateful that you did this interview. That makes it all worth it. Yes i would do it all over again.

No. 2: Argumentative speech
Imagine that you are going to participate in a debate on national TV. The debate is about environmental issues and you have prepared a short speech on the following topic:
  • Recent reports show that it requires international cooperation to lower average temperatures on earth. But how far should we go in order to save the planet? Should we boycott travelling by airplane and always take the train? Should we ban the imports of goods from far away? Or is the fear of global warming just propaganda?
Take a stand in the climate change issue. Find arguments to support your view and try to predict possible counter-arguments in order to turn them to your advantage.
Read  pp 213-214 in Blueprint about how to prepare and structure an argumentative speech.
Your speech should be approximately 3 minutes long. Remember that it is important to speak freely. Speaking at a debate on TV inevitably means that you cannot read from a script!  A good way to prepare is to write down important keywords. Then practise speaking freely from your list of keywords. When you feel confident about speaking you record the soundfile.
Are you using other sources than your own mind? If yes - do not forget to list them in the box to the right.

Read about the History of the United States of America in the realia handout in the Novo library (kursbiblioteket).
From the facts and the list of keywords for further studies, write about three important events or persons in the American history. Also tell me why you chose them. The essay should be about 400-500 words.
In order to solve this task successfully you need to search for relevant information. You can use the realia handout, books, magazines, the Internet etc. You must use at least two different sources. When looking for information it is important to be a critical reader. Can the sources that you are using be trusted? Who is behind it?
All sources that you have used must be listed at the end of your essay. If using Internet-based sources, the exactweb addresses should be listed. Also tell me what you did to evaluate the credibility of the sources. (The sources and the source-critical discussion is not included in the word limit.) Only sources in English, please!

The New Deal – Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR)

When FDR became president 1933, it was during the great depression. He was acting fast to save the economy and help the people. The new deal was the turning point. FDR started projects and programs that created jobs. The first programs was “National industrial recovery act” and   “Agricultural adjustment act”. FDR was letting farmers lend money to start up their farms. He also started to give monthly payment to people without jobs, to people who had retired.

The Puritans and the Pilgrim fathers – The Mayflower

The Mayflower was the ship that took the 102 Pilgrims from England, in september 1620, to the new world at Plymouth in North America.
The pilgrims was seeking religious freedom from the church in England. Who at the time was catholic.
In 1629 came the puritans to Salem in North America. The puritans was the people who wanted to purify the church. They didn’t want to separate themself from church, they wanted to improve it. They lived as orthodox believers.
The puritans and the pilgrims was the ones that started to divided america into the states they are now.
Many people can do a genealogy and find themself related to one of the 102 pilgrims.

The Civil Rights Movement

This movement was about the black people getting equal rights as the white people. In 1868 the black people, the slaves, got the same right by law as everyone else. In 1870 the black male people got the right to vote.
After the civil war the slavery ended, but the black people still had to live with racism against them. After a long fight for justice the African Americans began a two decade long fight for equality. (1950-1960).

My words on why i wanted to write about these events.

I choose to read and write about this three events because i think all of them are important to the history we now live in. The new deal made it better for people financially. And it still lives on today. Without Franklin D. Roosevelt, the financial crisis wouldn’t stopped as fast as it did. And maybe people without work wouldn’t gotten the help they did.

The pilgrims and the puritans is a way to show that it is up to every single person to believe or not believe in god. They took a stand in that question.

The civil rights movement, i think is the biggest history event of the three event. No human should never ever be slaves!

Svar från studerande:
My dear Diary!

Oh what a wonderful night at the assembly, i feel so happy tonight.

Mr Bingley was such a gentleman towards me and the girls. I am so grateful that Mr Bennet talked to Mr Bingley so that we could be acquainted with each other.

And also so that Mr Bingley knew about my daughters.

I just want to find a suitable husband for my daughters. Is that too much to ask for? No, i do not think so! How i love Mr Bingley! He is such a gentleman. He danced all dances, he really loves to dance. Tonight at the assembly Mr Bingley danced with Jane, twice! And Elisabeth told me that Mr Bingley had told Mr Darcy that Jane was the most beautiful girl he had seen. And Jane like Mr Bingley too.

Oh my dear diary, i can tell you everything. I will make sure that Jane and Mr Bingley get married. I can not tell that to Mr Bennet. He will think that i am crazy if i do and he do not agree with me. He does not care to get our daughters married, not as i do. I do not know how he is thinking. I can not allow my daughters marrying just any man! No! My daughters shall marry a handsome wealthy man.

And i feel that Mr Bingley has everything i want for my daughters.

My dear diary! I must tell you about Mr Darcy. I almost do not know what to say or think about him, he makes me angry. He has to be the most proud, boring and rude person i have ever met!

Mr Darcy looked so handsome and kind, when he entered the assembly. However, when he started to talk, or wait, he did not talk! He answered my questions very snotty, and then he was just immodest and walked away. I hope that i never have to see him again. And if i do. Then i will never let him dance with my daughters. Did you hear that Mr Darcy!

Good night.

Oh, wait. If i do see Mr Darcy again, i will most certainly tell him some unpleasant words.

Oh, oh, Did i tell you that Mr Bingley danced with Jane twice? Oh, sorry yes i did.

Well, i wonder how Jane and Mr Bingley's children will look like. They will be so…

No more now. I have to go to bed and have a good night sleep. I have so much to find out about tomorrow.

Good night my dear diary.

Read the article "The Right Chemistry" on pp 39-45 in Blueprint B. Having read the article, answer the following three questions in your own words:
a) According to the article, what role did romance play in the early days of the human species?
b) According to the article, why is it common for many relationships to end after four or seven years?
c) According to the article, why do women tend to take longer before they fall in love?

Svar från studerande:
A. It became essential to child rearing. The body became visibly when the human began to walk on two legs. Which made the human more attractive towards one another.

B. The body stops producing PEA (Phenylethylamine), the chemical that makes you feel the kick of love. If a couple does not have any children in the first four years. Then the body stops producing the chemical. And some people need that chemical PEA to stay with their partner.

C. The woman need more time to get to know the man that she is interested in. She needs to feel if he is a safe man. Some women wants the man to have a secure economy. He shall also be a man that will be a good father to a future child.

So what do you think, can this information be useful in a relationship? Or is it too chemical to help us avoid falling into the obvious traps?

This is an example of evolutionary psychology which tries to find links between early and contemporary human behaviour in order to explain why we act the way we do. The behaviour is then seen as something genetical but there are also other branches of psychology that say that it is more about learning a behaviour socially. Probably there is some truth in both sides. What do you think?

No. 3: Speaking - Informative Speech
As a student of English 6 you need to develop strategies to search for relevant information in larger amounts of text, as well as strategies for source-critical approaches. You are also supposed to learn more about historical, political and cultural conditions in different parts of the world where English is used. In this assignment you get to work with all of that.
In Studieguide 1 you read about British history.  Your task now is to choose one of the keywords in the list (p 6 in the Realia-document)  and give a speech on the importance of that event or person in British history. Please watch the video below about how to record a sound file.
This is the imagined speech situation:
  • You give your presentation to a group of other students of English 6.
  • Your task is to make them interested in this particular event or person.
  • Your task is also to inform them about the importance of this event/person.
In order to solve this task successfully you need to search for relevant information. You can use books, magazines, the Internet etc.
You must use at least two different sources. When looking for information it is important to be a critical reader. Can the sources that you are using be trusted? Who is behind it? Remember that the source-critical approach is also part of the assessment!
All sources that you have used must be listed in the text editor. If using Internet-based sources, the exact web addresses should be listed. Also tell me what you did to make sure your sources are reliable - a few sentences in the text editor for each source is enough. All the sources must be in English, you can not use sources in Swedish, or any other language.
Remember that it is important to speak freely. You should not read from a full manuscript. A good way to prepare is to write down important keywords. Then practise speaking freely from your list of keywords. When you feel confident about speaking you record the soundfile. Your speech should be 2-3 minutes long.
You also find valuable advice and recommendations on how to structure an informative speech on pp. 212-213 in Blueprint B. Make sure to read them through carefully.

You have collected interesting and relevant facts about an important document in British History. You present the facts in a clear manner, but it sounds as if you are reading. If you are, a good piece of advice is to write down a few keywords instead of a whole text. In that way you will be able to speak more freely. There is a big difference between READING and SPEAKING. In the sound files you are supposed to speak. If you are able to speak freely, there is also a greater possibility that you will actually learn these facts. Also, there is no grading criteria for reading out loud.

If you want to get more fluent and expand your vocabulary I recommend you to listen to as much spoken English as you possibly can, preferably every day. There are, apart from films and TV-shows, many downloadable radio shows on the BBC's homepage: www.bbc.co.uk. You can listen to American public radio at  www.npr.org
If you feel unsure about speaking English and want to practise more, why not join our extra-curricular, completely voluntary conversation classes? They take place on Mondays and Thursdays. You find more information about the conversation classes in Kursforum (see Kursöversikten).

It's important to evaluate the reliability and scholarship of information you find in both print and electronic formats.
Use these guidelines when evaluating web resources for authenticity:

Authorship
If the author is not identified be wary of unnamed webmasters. It should be evident who created the content of the page. If the author is identified, what are his/her credentials? Does he/she have expertise in this field? You might want to do an Internet search on the author's name to verify his/her identity. Is contact information provided?

Publishing body or web server
This can help you determine the origin of the document, for example whether it is produced by a federal or local agency, a nonprofit organization or a commercial web site. A web site on a university or institution's server is more likely to be a reliable objective source than one on a commercial site.

Sponsorship
Some sites are officially approved by the parent organization to which they're linked. Others can be on a parent site but not officially sponsored by the organization. A personal home page on a university's server does not automatically confer reliability.

Timeliness
Be aware of when the web page was created and how recently it's been updated. Is the information current? Outdated information and broken links indicate that the page is not being maintained.

Scope
Is the range of information presented comprehensive? Does it organize or present material in a creative, useful way or just rehash information found easily elsewhere?

Accuracy and objectivity
Can the facts presented on a web site be substantiated elsewhere? Be aware of data that can't be confirmed or that presents a biased view of information. Web sites often have a particular agenda or viewpoint they are trying to portray, which may affect the way information is presented.

Footnotes and bibliographies
References and links to other sources can add to a document's credibility, depth of scholarship, and authority.

Outside reviewers
Has the site been rated by one of the Internet rating groups? Sites that have been awarded good ratings are always quick to display them in an effort to legitimize their site. Be aware, however, that Internet ratings groups have differing criteria or standards of quality.

Design
Is the site well-organized and easy to navigate? Look for an overall design that makes it easy to find or search for the information you need.
It is extremely important that you read and follow all the instructions carefully. The word/time limit that you are given reflects the level of detail required. This means that if your assignment is too long, you're either taking too many words to explain your point or giving too many / too detailed examples. If your assignment is too short, either there is more to the answer than you have written or the assignment has not gone into enough detail about the answer.

The word/time limit adds to the challenge by requiring that academic skills be demonstrated within a relatively small number of words. Producing incisive and clear written/spoken work within a certain limit is an important skill in itself, which will be useful in many aspects of life at and beyond university.

Tips.
